We will be holding a series of discussions on African appreciation. This series will be centered on the economic forces that shaped Africa and its people during the time of enslavement and Colonialism. We will also discuss the emergence of Pan-Africanism and the mass struggle toward African Independence.

As we enter our 23rd year, we are delighted to introduce our new director, Sarah Edwards, and many new board members. Yes, we will review our accomplishments in 2014 but Sarah will also be looking forward and outlining the course we are charting for 2015 and beyond.

New to Simply Living? Just curious to learn more about us? Need a refresher to keep up with new initiatives? We’ll go over our ongoing programs (Socials, Films, Earth Institute courses) and talk about newer initiatives like the Central Ohio Transition Hub, our Local Economy Coalition, and our emerging “Simply Living University” we’re calling “Sustainable U.” Light refreshments will be served. Come learn the role that music has played within the African-American community from local jazz musician Arnett Howard, a major contributor to the collection. Local musician and former music teacher Mary Daniels will discuss the importance of music teachers. And, hear about the influence of music during the Civil Rights era.

A Time Bank is a community of people who support each other. Join us as we honor Civil Rights legend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our program includes a day filled with remembrance and celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The celebration will kick-off with the annual Martin Luther King Day March which will begin from the King Arts Complex and end at the historic Lincoln Theatre where we will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King through an inspirational program featuring guest speaker Julian Bond.

Event details:

Breakfast will be served, 8-10am, in Henderson Hall. A community program will be held in the main sanctuary at 10am [there will be Civil Rights videos in the main sanctuary until 10am]. Testimonies on police abuse will be taken, 12noon-4pm.

Tell your story of police abuse. Testify before a panel of community leaders and attorneys. Testimony will be under oath and will be recorded for public use. It will be made available to the media, the Department of Justice, and the City of Columbus in order to deal with a systemic problem.
