Angela Yvonne Davis is an American political activist, academic scholar, and author, who emerged as a prominent counterculture activist and radical in the 1960s as a leader of the Communist Party USA and had close relations with the Black Panther Party through her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. Known for books like Women, Race & Class, she has advocated for gender equity, prison reform, and alliances across color lines.

During the hot and deadly summer of 1964, the nation could not turn away from Mississippi. Over ten memorable weeks in 1964, known as Freedom Summer, more than 700 student volunteers from around the country joined organizers and local African Americans in a historic effort to shatter the foundations of white supremacy in what was one of the nation’s most viciously racist and segregated states.
